Netflix has a new show called "Next In Fashion" that has the same concept as "Project Runway" but is much more light hearted, happy, and funny. This may end up being my new favorite show.
Next in Fashion is a new fashion design competition show that has the same spirit as Project Runway but has a lot of differences as well. The premise of the show is that the designers who have entered the competition must show the judges why THEY are going to be "the next big thing" in fashion. They are to create designs that meet each episode's challenge but also make a garment that demonstrates what they think fashion in the near future will look like. I am going to break down the show for you and help you get to know the hosts, judges, and designers.
The show starts off with 18 designers, which is more than Project Runway (which usually has 12-14 designers). It is hosted by Tanveer "Tan" France and Alexa Chung. It is kind of refreshing because having two hosts offers some comic relief and banter between them.
Why were they chosen to host you ask?
Tan, who is best know for his work as the fashion guru on the Queer Eye reboot that Netflix has created, also has a web series that he hosts called Dressing Funny. France's interest in fashion began at a young age, inspired by the clothing that was made in his grandparents' denim factory. By age thirteen he was able to construct a denim jacket. He attended Doncaster College where he studied fashion.
Alexa is a writer, television presenter, model, and fashion designer. She launched her fashion label called Alexachung in May 2017. Chung is a muse to many fashion designers because of her distinctive personal style; the designer handbag company Mulberry created the "Alexa"which is a much sought-after bag named after and inspired by her.
The Detes
The grand prize of $250,000 will be awarded by Net-a-Porter, along with the opportunity to retail their designs on the luxury e-commerce website. A rotating panel of judges which includes designers, models and Instagram influencers will decide who wins each challenge and who is to be eliminated. Each week, for nine episodes, the eighteen contestants will be tasked with the challenge to create different types of designs based off of that episode's theme. They will be voted off by the judges two an episode, until only two are left standing. The final two designers will have a runway show-off in episode ten. They have only three days to demonstrate why they are the "next big thing in fashion" by creating a 10 piece collection for the finalé.
The Designers
One thing that I really enjoyed was that the design competition wasn't open to just designers from the United States but rather to designers from all over the world. As I blog about each episode and the challenge that it presents the designers, I will also write in more detail about the designers that are the winners and losers of the episode so you can get to know them better. Here are the designers who entered the competition:

All ten episodes of Next In Fashion are now streaming on Netflix, so you can go and binge the entire show in a day if you really wanted to. I like watching it once, and then going back and re-watching the show so that I can see the things that I missed and also take a closer look at each design that walks the runway. I can't wait to give you all the episode break downs and critique the shit out of the designs!
XO, Krista
